ACV Results

AMEX Cardholder Verification (ACV) Results is a nine-character field that displays a string of American Express responses to a merchant’s request for verification of cardholder data.

Currently, five separate components of cardholder data can receive responses (the remaining four character spaces are for future use). The five components of cardholder data and their possible response values are noted in the following table:

Cardholder Data

Possible AMEX Response Value

Cardholder Postal Code (Zip Code or Zip + 4)

  • Y = Matches
  • N = Does not match
  • U = Data not checked
  • R = Retry
  • S = Service not allowed
  • space = data not requested

Cardholder Street Address

Cardholder first and last name

Cardholder billing telephone number

Cardholder e-mail address

The term matches means that the cardholder data submitted by the merchant matches what American Express has on file for the cardholder (a sample response string would be YNU Y).
