About terminal boarding

Terminal boarding refers to the process by which a terminal is added and configured in Express. When you board a terminal, you associate it with a merchant that has been configured in Express, then you configure the terminal's attributes. After you complete the terminal boarding process, you can perform additional actions related to the terminal, such as modify the terminal's record and report on the terminal's activity.

Application-enabled workflow

Express is designed to facilitate the terminal boarding process by guiding you through all the requisite terminal boarding pages. When you set up a new terminal, which is the first step in boarding a terminal, you will encounter the first in a series of sequential pages that will guide you through the process. This application-enabled workflow ensures that you visit all the requisite pages when you are boarding a merchant.

To stay within the workflow, click the Next and the Previous buttons located at the bottom of each terminal boarding page to browse forward and backward between pages. Doing this ensures that each page you encounter is the next page or previous page in The Train's sequence and that this sequence remains intact.

In cases where you are not able to complete a terminal boarding from start to finish, you can save the record and begin another task. The incomplete terminal record becomes a Work in Progress (WIP). To continue boarding the terminal, access the terminal record from your Works in Progress list. From WIP, you are placed back within the workflow at the first page that contains incomplete or incorrect data. Stay within the workflow as described above to advance through the remaining terminal boarding pages and complete the process.

Validating and boarding your work from the terminal screens

When you complete all the data entry and configuration tasks in the terminal boarding process (Terminal Detail, Terminal Setup, Card Range Setup and Host Setup screens), you are ready to validate and board the record. Validation can be performed as a separate process using the Validate button, or it can be done in combination with boarding by using the Board button. The terminal record must be in edit mode.

Validating the terminal record verifies that the information provided in the terminal record is complete and applies business rules to the terminal data. If the record fails validation, the system will take you to the errors page where you may correct the conditions that caused the error.

When you choose the Board button rather than the Validate button, the system fires all the same rules that the separate steps of validate and board use, but in one click.  Upon completion of the Board action, assuming no errors are found, the system will refresh the current page into view mode, providing visual confirmation to the user that their Board request was processed successfully.  The user can then use the Reload function, where available, to continue making changes to subsequent entities.

Using the enhanced terminal and merchant reload feature

The terminal reload feature allows you to continue viewing the same terminal page but with a different terminal in context. The merchant reload (from the terminal screens) takes you to the Merchant Summary page in view mode.

This feature is especially useful when making multiple changes to merchants or terminals. This feature is only available in view mode, and only available on the Terminal Detail, Terminal Setup or the Card Range Setup pages.

The merchant boarding pages only allow you to reload merchant entities, while the terminal setup and card range setup pages allow you to reload either a terminal or merchant entity. The merchant boarding pages are also limited to reloading non-front end only merchants, but this limitation does not exist on the terminal details and card range setup pages, which can also load pended merchants.

The terminal reload feature allows you to enter partial merchant or terminal numbers. If more than one match for your partial number is found, the application will display a list of the possible matches on the Search Results page. You can then bring the appropriate entity into context by clicking on its Merchant Number hyperlink.

Modifying your work

To modify a successfully boarded terminal, search for the terminal that you want to modify. Then browse to the pages containing the data that you want to change by using the Quick Links provided in the sidebar of each terminal boarding page.

All modifications to a terminal record require the creation of a new request. Clicking the Edit button on any of the terminal boarding pages will open the page in edit mode.

After making your modifications, you are required to submit the record again. Your modifications must pass the same checks that were performed when the record was initially submitted. If necessary, you can send the changed terminal record into your Works in Progress and return to complete your modifications later.
